    INTERNATIONAL FORUM OF SMALL PORTS IN THE ADRIATIC AND MEDITERRANEAN SEA

    Monopoli, 8th-9th October 2010

    The Municipality of Monopoli, in partnership with the Port Authority of Levante and the Municipality of Alberobello, is working to develop and strengthen profitable relations with Adriatic and Mediterranean Ports.

    The aim is to build up new networks of marine services, linking the minor ports of the Adriatic and the Mediterranean and make them alternative or integrative to the large lines to Bari and Brindisi in Puglia Region.

    The Monopoli port is nowadays a landmark for the commercial traffic in the Adriatic Sea, but recently the Municipality and the Port Authority of Levante have agreed to enlarge their range of activities also to tourist targets. This agreement represents an important pass key to discover one of most beautiful tourist district of Apulia Region: the “Valle d’Itria” area with its coasts and the "Trulli Unesco Patrimony".

    Actually, we’re being given the chance to develop relationships between port authorities and coastal or inland cities and to facilitate the creation of new sea-links; but, above all, to become instrument to create stable institutional cooperation and synergies in economical-tourist-cultural field.

    In particular, the presence of coasts and Unesco Site in the Valle d’Itria Area encourage the Municipality of Monopoli and the Port Authority of Levante to develop the brand “Trulli’s coast” and to look for relationships and cooperation strategies with ports in the Adriatic and Mediterranean Sea.

    The idea is to link Adriatic and Mediterranean minor ports to each other, and to net Unesco Sites building new lines for passengers and new cruise routes.

    Moreover, this strategy is consistent with the European Union Cooperation Programme CBC Programme IPA Adriatic 2007-2013 and CBC Programme ENPI MED 2007-2013 (promotion of sustainable transport services to improve territorial links, with the aim of achieving integrated development of the Adriatic and Mediterranean areas and accessibility to bordering territories).

    This is why, the Municipality of Monopoli, in partnership with the Port Authority of Levante and the Municipality of Alberobello, is organising an International Forum of Small Ports in the Adriatic and Mediterranean Sea, on next 8th-9th October 2010.

    The Forum is an opportunity to discuss among Local Institutions, Port Authorities, Shipping and Tourist Operators, Chief Executives Cruise about:

    - enhancing the institutional and economical cooperation among the target areas;
    - promoting concrete operational actions that would lead to synergies among maritime transport systems of the target areas;
    - settling joint strategic policies for the development of the target areas (a new tourist district coherent to the Apulian ongoing “wide area policies”);
    - enhancing the capacity of smaller ports to become instruments for the promotion of local tourist districts;
    - promoting new shipping lines for passengers and new cruise routes to ensure the accessibility to bordering territories;
    - building a partnership to participate to the next IPA Adriatic and\or ENPI MED call for proposals.
