«Una statuetta di S. Antonio era venerata nell’ oratorio privato del ricco e devoto Sindaco, la cui moglie, sebbene molto buona, aveva il grandissimo difetto della maldicenza.

Durante una rigida sera d’ inverno, chiacchierando con amici intorno ad un focolare, la signora non smentì, come al solito, questa sua umana debolezza, tantochè una vocina sbottò spazientita:”mo me ne vado”. La padrona di casa, attribuendo la voce all’umile servitore, lo licenziò.
Questa anomala circostanza si ripetè per altre sere, finche una volta, la sciagurata donna, alla vocina piu’ irritata che mai, rispose di andarsene una buona volta.

La mattina seguente, il frate sacrestano, mentre di buon’ora riforniva le lampade, fu colpito da una luce accecante, irradiata da una statua di S. Antonio, alta circa 1 metro, rinvenuta per terra. Anche questa strana situazione si ripetè nonostante la comunità di religiosi avesse restituito la statua,, riconoscendo il legittimo proprietario nel Sindaco, il quale, accortosi che S.Antonio voleva a tutti costi lasciare quella casa, la donò definitivamente ai frati.

Fu dunque collocata sull’ altare maggiore della chiesa, ma, non resistendo alla maldicenza popolare, fu presto ritrovata con le spalle rivolte all’assemblea e vanoo fu ogni tentativodi rigirarla, anche quando fu spostata in un apposito altare nel corso. Ecco perchè da allora fu detto S. Antonio il fuggitivo».


  The Saint
“A small statue of St. Antonio was venerated in the private oratory of the rich and pious mayor who had a wife so good and gossiper as well. During a hard winter night, while she was chatting with her friends around a fire, as usual the lady didn’t hide her “human weakness as a gossiper” so that an impatient little voice snapped: "mò me ne vado (I’m going to leave now)”. The householder thought that it was the voice of the servant and turned him out. Many times the odd event happened, the lady ordered to little and more impatient voice to go away forever.
The following day, the sacristan while he is setting the oil lamps right, a dazzling light from the falling down statue of St. Antonio, blinded him. The odd event happened again. Finally, the small statue of St. Antonio came back to the friars but the Mayor decided to donate the statue to the friars definitely.

Therefore, the statue was placed on the main altar of the church. However, as a reaction to the gossip people, the statue turned back, also when the statue moved again to another altar. For this reasons, he took the name St. Antonio il Fuggitivo ( St. Antonio who runs away).”
